Like the third (Dream Country) and eight (Worlds' End) collections, Fables and Reflections is a collection of short one-issue stories. Most of the stories do not contribute directly to the overall story arc of the series on a textual level but rather comment on its themes and provide subtext. The most conspicuous exception is the story "Orpheus", originally printed as the one-shot Sandman Special, which is central to the main story of the series.

Venture back to the French Revolution as Lady Johanna Constantine finds herself embroiled in a plot to smuggle a very odd and valuable item of specific interest to Morpheus: a human head!

2. August

Follow Augustus Caesar, a Roman Emperor who heavily disguises himself in order to spend a day unnoticed among his people. Through discussion with a servant, the Emperor reveals a stirring connection he shared with Morpheus, the Dream King.

3. Three Septembers and a January

Morpheus, the Dream King, joins three of his siblings in a contest revolving around the quirky life of America's first -- and only -- emperor.

4. The Hunt

A grandfather imparts a story of courage and adventure to his granddaughter featuring Morpheus, Lucien and the Dreaming! But what lies waiting at the end of the tale is the real shocker...

5. Soft Places

A young man becomes lost in The Dreaming where he uncovers wondrous knowledge. The only problem is he might not be able remember it when he awakes...

6. The Parliament of Rooks

Revisit Lyta Hall and her gifted child Daniel in this issue set in The Dreaming! When Daniel somehow crosses into the dream realm, he encounters familiar faces -- and learns secrets no other human knows...

7. Ramadan

The king of a dazzling version of Baghdad makes an otherworldly request for the Lord of Dreams to preserve his city's regality. But at what cost?

8. The Sandman Special (or Song of Orpheus)

Morpheus has done a lot of regrettable things in his existence, but this issue highlights one of his most remorseful as his son, Orpheus, comes to terms with his place in the Endless family -- and his own limits -- in a gruesome, standalone parable.
